What Determines Your Mood? ~ Tips to go from crabby to happy
First Listed September 14, 2009

I didn’t mean to eavesdrop…..but I was standing right next to two women who were talking about the weather.
It was cloudy and gray out and one lady was saying how this kind of weather makes her miserable. I thought about that a bit and realized how insane it is that we let our moods be determined by the weather, or any other outside factors for that matter.
I myself am guilty of this….. but now I am highly aware of my moods and now can contemplate the reason why I’m in that particular mood at the time. That doesn’t mean I’m going to change instantly from a bad mood to a good one, but what that does mean is because I’m aware of my mood, it has that much less power over me.
Have you ever been so crabby and you don’t even realize it until maybe an hour or two later when you just can’t stand being with yourself anymore or want to scream? Hopefully you do realize that you were or are in a bad mood because developing that awareness is the beginning of the end of that bad mood. Most people are still unaware of the moods they are in – they spend most of the day still in their heads, in their mental chatter, and go through their day like a zombie. I don’t want to be a zombie, how about you?
Here’s a few tips to start getting in the ‘Happy Zone’:
1. Set an intention to check in with yourself throughout your day and ask yourself how you are feeling at that moment. To develop this awareness, set your watch or cell phone alarm every hour. Or if you spend a lot of time on your computer, put it in your computer calendar or even write in it in your planner. If you don’t have access to any of those, just write yourself a sticky note (yes, I’m talking about the popular, overkill sticky note technique, but hey if it works…..) and write ‘What’s my Mood?’ on it and stick it up where you’ll see it daily.
2. Once you realize your mood, if it’s one you’d rather not be in, first Feel it, then Flip it – sound familiar? – yep, I know you’ve heard this from me before. But this time flip your mood, not just your thought. Or do both – even better. ![]()
For example: My cell phone alarm goes off and I check in with myself. I become aware that I’m in a stinky mood. So then I decide to feel it and flip it. I smile because I realize being in a rotten mood is not going to help me in any way (the energy already starts to shift).
Then I can enhance that mood even more by saying to myself, ‘Ok, I’m in a bad mood. Where am I feeling this in my body? Ok, I feel a kind of stuckness in my chest – I’m going to sit with this feeling for a few minutes.’
Then once you stay with your feeling, then you can engage the flip it part by saying, ‘I’m in a better mood and feel great.’
Then I get back to what I was doing until that alarm goes off again and I check in with myself and repeat the process. Soon you won’t even need any alarm or sticky note – you will develop the awareness and catch your moods before they catch you!
3. Use your essential oils! Create a synergy blend (2 or more eo’s blended together) or aroma mist and keep it with you in your coat pocket, purse, office or wherever you hang out. Smell your blend or inhale your mist throughout the day to give your senses a lift and also your mood a lift too!
Here’s some eo’s to try to get in the Happy Zone:
Sweet orange, grapefruit (this is a great mood lifter), lavender, bergamot, lemon, geranium rose, lemongrass, neroli, rosemary.

Enjoy getting in your Happy Zone!
