The Girl Effect = Empowerment
First Listed October 4, 2011
The Girl Effect is an amazing campaign that I decided to join in on by helping to spread the word by writing a post about it. Why? Because I want to help in making a difference.
“The Girl Effect” is a powerful idea: by investing in girls in the developing world, we make an incredibly effective investment in eradicating poverty, creating thriving communities, and slowing the spread of AIDS.
I know there is a lot of struggles that go on here in the United States as well as the rest of the world. And I hear people at times saying how we should help the people of this country first before helping others. And I would see myself agreeing with them. However, when I took a moment and really checked in with myself, it made me realize that by doing that, we are separating ourselves from the world. And I believe that we are not separate. What happens on the other side of the world affects us here and vice versa.
The oceans all around the world are connected and if one drop of one ocean ends up as a drop in another ocean, there is no fuss about it. It just is. And that drop of water is no better than the other drops that are in the oceans all around the world. That drop of water will become part of a wave, and that wave will flow back into the ocean and after it crests, another drop of water will pop out of that wave and the cycle continues. No one can say where one ocean begins and another one ends.
The Girl Effect is about girls, about boys, about Moms, about Dads, and villages and towns and countries.
CHILD MARRIAGE AND EARLY CHILDBIRTH
One girl in seven in developing countries marries before
age 15.
The 2 minute video below has a pretty powerful message. I hope you will take a look at it. And if you want to share the word too, I invite you to also write a post about The Girl Effect between now and October 11, 2011. You can find all the details here.

i love your analogy about the ocean. Yes we are all connected and we can each make a difference; whether it be through cultivating awareness or getting involved in the solution. Although every drop may not in and of itself be noticed. It’s when the drops pool together that you get the power of a large body of water such as the ocean.
