The Book of Happy by Dominee
Anxiety Story
I’ve had anxiety for as far back as I can remember. Over a year ago I decided to change my life. I wanted to find ways to treat my anxiety, to deal with my depression, and to find something that made my life feel not so empty. This led me to make a lot of changes in my personal life. The changes that I made led me to lose my best friend at the time. We stopped having things in common, we grew apart, and then we parted ways. This put my anxiety back in full swing when it was the very thing I was trying so hard to deal with. I’d wake up on the verge of a panic attack, I’d spend the day feeling like I wasn’t actually breathing.
Not only was I changing almost every aspect of my life, I felt completely alone as I undertook the journey.
The Golden Nugget
As I went through all of this, I realized that there were things and people that made me feel better and that’s how “The Book of Happy” began. I was having a pretty awful day where I was feeling like no one loved me and I realized that wasn’t true. So I asked my friends to write me a little note. It didn’t have to be anything special, something as simple as “I love you.” would work. I put those notes in a three-ring binder.
I’d find uplifting things from my favorite blogs, messages of love and hope and I’d print them out and put them in there too. When I was having a period of anxiety I’d write myself comforting letters, telling myself that it would be okay, and this too would pass. That all went into the Binder. There were reminders to look up funny clips from my favorite movies. One page that said “Stop and breathe” in big bold letters. Reminders to do the things that made me feel better. If that thing didn’t work at that time. I’d flip the page and find another tip on how to deal that worked for me.
This became my “Book of Happy” because it contained the things that made me happy.
Challenge
The next time you are feeling anxious write yourself a little note. Include in it the things you’d tell your best friend if they came to you feeling the way that you are feeling. Be comforting, hopeful, and positive.
Let this be the first page of your own Book of Happy.

Dominee I absolutely love this post! I have been known to write myself notes and hide them-trusting that I would find them at the right moment but this is fantastic! Thank you and Gina for sharing!

Great idea, Dominee! I keep a folder on my work computer (and now on my home one too) that I call “encouraging comments”, and every time I get some positive feedback on my writing or something I’ve done for someone, that’s where it goes.
It’s an awesome resource to look back through on the days where everything seems to be going wrong!
Blessings – TANJA
