Prompt #3
One Strong Belief by Buster Benson
“It is easy in the world to live after the world’s opinion; it is easy in solitude to live after our own; but the great man is he who in the midst of the crowd keeps with perfect sweetness the independence of solitude.” - Ralph Waldo Emerson, Self-Reliance
The world is powered by passionate people, powerful ideas, and fearless action. What’s one strong belief you possess that isn’t shared by your closest friends or family? What inspires this belief, and what have you done to actively live it?
(Author: Buster Benson)

One strong belief I have is to question every belief, every thought, that shows up in my mind.
If you believe everything you hear, if you believe everything you say, if you believe everything you think, what is left? We are so conditioned from such a young age as to how things ‘should be’. We hear parents, teachers and other adults spew out what they believe and we see how they react when someone questions them. How are you discovering what it is that YOU truly believe if you do not question every belief, every thought, that runs through your mind? Passionate people, powerful ideas, and fearless action – these qualities do not seem to manifest from people who just follow along with what everyone else says is true. They have made space for their own truth to show itself.
I actively live this belief every day by being Aware of each thought that flows into my mind and I just notice it. Is it true? How do I feel when I believe this to be true? What does my body say to me when I think this thought?
Is it easy to take a stand and not believe what everyone else says you should believe? Yes and No. In the beginning, when you discover and become aware of your thoughts and how you react or respond to them, it may not be easy to stand out amongst a crowd. But then as you begin to discover how sweet it is to know your truth, it becomes easier and easier to stand in it and not be affected by what others say.
This, I believe, is one aspect of experiencing true freedom.

Hi G,
Nowadays, when someone speaks to me I usually question the feeling that comes up in myself after hearing the words spoken. I used to get all caught up in the story, the drama, but now I turn in to myself and ask what do those words bring up in me. And that is where I get my answers and learn about myself. That’s one way my life moves forward instead of getting entangled and stuck. I feel the freedom in this process.
Shine On!
